Uros Islands
The floating islands of the Uros are built of interwoven layers of
reeds one on top of the other. The reeds are of great importance to the
Uros, they also use them for food, as medicine, for handicrafts, as fuel
for cooking, for building dwellings, rafts and boats. The unique life form
of the Uros and their artificial islands are a major attraction for
tourists from all over the world. The Uros are descendants of a culture
that had its origins before the Incas. At present, language and customs
are largely adapted to neighboring Aymaras.
