Lamas
Lamas, 20 km northwest of Tarapoto, is built on a hill unlike other settlements in the Amazon region.
In the 15th century, Chancas from the Ayacucho area, fleeing from the Incas, arrived here. The local descendants of the founders still speak Quechua today. Unlike other Amazonians, the specific culture and folklore have remained unchanged, leading to Lamas being referred to as the «folk capital» of the region.
The height differences are quite large in Lamas and distributed over
three platforms, the «Three-storey-city».
