Puno

The city of Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Puno was founded in 1668 as Villa Rica de San Carlos de Puno by Virrey Conde de Lemos. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, it was home to the Tiahuanaco, Pucará, Collas and Lupacas cultures.

Because of its artistic and cultural characteristics, Puno is considered the «folkloristic capital of Peru». The large number of native dances is particularly striking: 300 out of 1500 at national level.

Puno is the starting point for visiting the charming natural and artificial islands in Lake Titicaca with the peculiar habits of their inhabitants.
