Urubamba valley –

the sacred valley of the Incas

The Urubamba valley between Pisac and Ollantaytambo – the sacred valley of the Incas – was highly valued by the Incas because of its geographical and climatic conditions. With the fertile soil that produces the best corn kernels in Peru, it was the Inca Empire's main food supplier. Impressive buildings by Pisac, Qenko, Tambomachay, Chinchero, Maras, Moray and Ollantaytambo still bear witness to the importance of the valley for the Incas. At the upper reaches the river is called Vilcanota, this name comes from the quechua word Wilcamayu and means «sacred river».
