Tarapoto
Tarapoto on the Shilcayo River is the main town in the Mayo Valley in
Peru's northern jungle. The city is known for its numerous palm trees and
hilly
surroundings,
for many beautiful waterfalls, including Ahuashiyacu (the laughing water)
and Huacamaillo. The beauties of the landscape, the lush vegetation and
the pleasant climate make this area compare to paradise. The variety of
orchids is famous. More than 2500 species have already been identified.
Among the lakes, the most notable are Laguna Azul and Lago Lindo, located
east of Tarapoto in the Cordillera Azul.
The beginning of the settlement goes back to the tribes of Pocras and Hanan Chancas, who fled from the Incas and looked for a new home.
The name of the city probably comes from the palm trees «Icartea
Ventricosa Martins», called «Tarapotus» by locals, which used to grow on
the shore of the former lake «Suchiche».
