Jungle in the Amazon region
Most of Peru's territory (just over 60%) is covered by primeval forest (jungle). Due to the different altitudes, proximity to the equator, soil conditions and settlement, this presents itself in very different forms: tropical and subtropical jungle, cloud forest, rain forest, mountainous jungle, lowland jungle, year-round or occasionally flooded jungle, blackwater jungle, cultivated jungle area, regenerated jungle, primary forest , secondary forest. Depending on the conditions, the plants and animals of the jungle also vary, all in all an unimaginably diverse flora and fauna, e.g. more than 600 different bird species in a relatively small area.
Large areas of the jungle have been declared protected areas in order to preserve them in their original form. At various points in the peruvian jungle there are jungle hostels (lodges) for a wide variety of requirements and corresponding tourist services to enable tourists to experience the magic of the jungle, its plants, animals and indigenous inhabitants.
